Korean Bilingual Classes at Campsie Public School

Campsie Public School is one of four Bilingual Schools in NSW, and the only federally funded Korean Bilingual School. The program is highly sought after and widely respected. In 2019 the school was recognised at a national level as a finalist in the Australian Education Awards for best co-curricular program. The school is regarded as a lighthouse school for language education and we’ve hosted a wide range of visitors from state, national and international education bodies. Students in the Korean Program participate in one hour of curriculum instruction delivered in Korean per day.

Our Korean Bilingual program is taught through a CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning) approach, where students learn regular curriculum content in the target language for one hour per day. In Kindergarten, students are enrolled into the bilingual class, where they stay together as a class for their lessons in English as well as those in Korean. Students in the bilingual classes cover the same concepts and content through a different target language (the same lesson is delivered in Korean instead of English).

To stimulate the interests of our students, we incorporate a wide range of cultural activities in our Korean language lessons. These include calligraphy, brush painting, origami, cooking and art & craft. Extracurricular activities have also been devised to secure more time exposed to Korean language and to incorporate cultural awareness and knowledge. Students participate in Taekwondo, Janggu drumming, K-pop skipping, and modern and traditional Korean dance.

Approximately 25% of students in the Korean Bilingual Program are background Korean language speakers, with the other 75% learning Korean as a new or additional language. Research demonstrates the numerous benefits of learning a new language, including impacts on wellbeing, social skills, musical and mathematical abilities, and vastly improved academic and cognitive skills. Our own in-school research supports these findings.

We have Department of Education approved enrolment agreements with high schools and the ‘Secondary College Languages (SCL)’, formerly known as the ‘Saturday School of Languages’, to ensure students are able to continue their Korean language studies into high school.
